Message: The final day of putting down the Floor on July 19, 2008... the skim coat, a water proofing agent that is put on top of the sub floor to take the self adhesive flooring. This served to level the floor to prevent the tile from working its way into the cracks between the sub floor and the screw holes. This particular skim coat was purchased at Lowes and comes with a mixing agent that makes it slightly flexible and water proof. This is necessary because of the wood framed sub floor that moves slightly as it is walked on. With a regular cement skim coat, it would cause real problems in the future that would make it ugly and probably lumpy as the cement cracked underneath. Also, it would allow moisture to seep through and negate the power of the adhesive located on the bottom of the tiles.
